I've been looking forward to posting this story since Kate first told me about the idea. It's a long and satisfying read; it's truly some of the best writing I've seen this year. Thanks for sharing, Kate! Pierre the Dolphin Pierre is a dolphin. He lives of the coast of Florida with his best friends, Francine and Gaston. They have been best friends for as long as Pierre can remember, but Pierre has always been different. They are always there for each other despite that though. There was never a moment that Pierre felt lonely or afraid because he had his friends. As the weeks till school turned into days, Pierre became very excited. Finally the final days of summer slipped away and it was time for school. As soon as he swam up to school the excitement turned into butterflies in his stomach. He mustered all the courage he could find and swam through the door. Pierre looked around and then spotted Francine and Gaston. He swam over, eager to ask them about how the start of their day was. “This will be so fun!” said Gaston. Pierre thought so too, at least until gym class. ‘’This isn’t that bad, I don’t think anything could go wrong,” he said. Well, something did go wrong, and that something is called gym class. Pierre and his class all swam down the hall to the gym. “It is time for gymnastics,” said the teacher. Everyone cheered, everyone except Pierre. Gymnastics was hardest for Pierre because the his body wasn’t as agile and flexible as the other dolphins. Pierre’s body was made for napping and lounging in the sea. They started off with stretching. Pierre tried with all of his might but he couldn’t do the back bends and forward rolls like the rest of his class. When the class leaned back, Pierre fell forward. Just when Pierre was about to give up, the bell rang. “Time for science class,” said the teacher. Pierre let out a breath of relief. “Finally something I can do” he thought. He swam over to Francine and Gaston. “That was so fun!” they both said. Pierre didn’t want to ruin their mood so he just lied and said, “Yes totally.” Everyone swam down the hall once more, waving hello to the other classes that they passed. After many long hallways, they reached the science lab. They had never seen a class with as much equipment as this room. “Good morning students and welcome to the world of science.” said a dolphin coming out from behind an array of beakers. “I am Ms. Fizz and I will be your science teacher all through sea school. Today we are going to be studying the structure of our bones using this new x-ray given to us by the local hospital.” Pierre thought an x-ray sounded very excited and couldn’t wait to try it. Everyone got in a single file line to test it out. Francine went first, she stepped behind the screen and they could see all of her bones. He thought it was very cool. Pierre was next and he could barely contain his excitement. The teacher called him up and he stepped behind the screen. Ms. Fizz gasped. She was the first to speak, “Pierre, this news might be hard to take in, but according to this x-ray you are not a dolphin. You are actually a manatee.” He was very surprised at first, but soon he realized how this all made sense. All of those times that Pierre felt different, it was because he was a manatee and could not do the stuff dolphins can do. After that moment, everyone was treating him like he had actually been part sea monster instead of just being a manatee. Even Francine and Gaston weren’t the same. Pierre hated not being with friends and having a normal life. It wasn’t until one day when Pierre realized he had a purpose all along. It was the big day to visit the beach and everyone was thrilled. Even Pierre was happy, he had been waiting for this day for his whole life. All of Pierre’s class started the long swim the beach. After many long minutes, they finally started seeing the sunlight sifting through the waves. Not long after that, they started seeing legs; human legs. Everyone was nervous, what if the humans tried to hurt them. They finally reached the surface. All of the dolphins were flipping around, trying to get the people’s attention. Clearly it was working because all the humans where pointing and yelling, “Look at the dolphins they are so cute!” Pierre just sank back into the water not wanting the humans to see his differences from the rest of the group. He started swimming away but didn’t get very far. Just then, a piercing sound rang through the sea. Pierre’s heart started racing. That sound wasn’t just a cry for help, it was the emergency call that every dolphin learned in sea school. This call meant that Pierre’s friends were in grave danger.
He swam at a speed that no dolphin or manatee had ever swam before. He didn’t care how his body was made, right now he was just a rocket cutting through the water to save his friends. When he finally reached the surface he was worried that he was too late. Humans wearing wet suits that said “Ocean World” were circling a small rock. On it was Francine and Gaston. He suddenly felt terrified, he was alone in the ocean with a team of humans from an aquarium. But, even though it was scary, Pierre told himself he had to save his friends from these humans. Pierre looked around, he needed a distraction to get the hunters away. He suddenly had an idea. He gathered all of the thoughts and knowledge he had learned in P. E. about jumps and shot himself into the air. Thankfully Pierre’s plan worked and he got the hunters attention. As soon as the hunters saw him, their confidence dropped. Pierre made the most un-dolphin like sound he could make and he scared those hunters so bad that he was sure they wouldn’t be coming back to that beach for awhile. “Pierre you saved us!” said Francine. “I didn’t know you had it in you!” said Gaston. Pierre felt a strong confidence he hadn’t felt in a long time. It was at this moment when he realized that he shouldn’t have let something like being a manatee get in the way of his friendship. As soon as everyone had gotten back to the safety of the classroom Pierre went to talk to his friends. He was worried that they still would avoid him even if he had saved them. But, as soon as he walked up all of that worry vanished. “Oh Pierre we missed being friends with you! Can we go back to the way it was before?" said Francine and Gaston. “Of course! I missed our friendship too and I was worried I was going to lose y’all," replied Pierre. Pierre, Francine, and Gaston are still friends to this day. Who cares that Pierre is not a dolphin, he had the best friends in the seven seas and that is what matters.
