Over the past couple of years, NFL protests have spiked. One of the most well known sports protests happened during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. 2 African American athletes put their fists up during the medal ceremony. It was a very bold statement at the time based on racial tensions that were still occurring in the world (still racism today). In today's world, popular figures in the sports world are taking a stand. One of the more noticeable protests has come from Colin Kaepernick, a current quarterback and free agent. In the pre-season of last year, Kaepernick sat on the bench during the national anthem. It was He later changed to him kneeling during the national anthem. Lots of people were against his protests, but some supported. The argument I often hear is that people are out there fighting for you so you should just stand for the flag. I think that people are out there fighting for you to keep the country free. That’s what makes the United States so great. The people out there fighting for you, are, fighting so that you can have the right to protest and have the right to free speech. Very recently, lots of teams have joined in on the protest. The whole Dallas Cowboy team and the owner kneeled before the national anthem. Odell Beckham Jr. put his fist in the air, commonly known as a black power symbol, after scoring a touchdown. Overall, I don’t have anything against the protests as long as they are performed respectfully. -Courtesy of an anonymous 7th grader What do you think?
